Description: A-040This Stanley No. 45 Combination Plane, Type 3 (1888-1889), is being offered as a great start to someone with the desire of building a complete set, or to simply take up some room on a shelf somewhere (as it did in my house for a number of years. Stanley built the No. 45 from 1883-1962, so the Type 3 is very early in the run and considered one of the rarer ones. This particular type used the earlier unnotched plane irons (Types 1-4), as there is no adjustment mechanism. The later notched irons will work in this plane, however the notch was necessary to activate the new mechanical adjusters that became standard in 1893. Prior to that, plane iron adjustments were made "by hand"', similar to that necessary in most old-style wooden hand planes. This plane comes with everything pictured in its "as found" condition. There are a couple of tight checks in the rosewood which seems to be typical in these older examples. Notice that the spurs are missing, along with the two short rods which may or may not have been optional equipment at that time. Either way, what you see is what you get. Although not destined for the museum, this historic example deserves to continue on, and be passed along to a new custodian, perhaps even make a shaving or two before it's gone. Thank you for your interest.
