Description: This large, beautiful Haitian folk painting features a man and woman either headed to the market or returning from the market. The man is leading a pig on a rope and the woman is balancing a large basket of fruit on her head. They are walking along a dirt road with a fence and cottage in the background with two tall palm trees in the center. This is a folk scene illustrating traditional Haitian life, painted by Andres Leveque. Andres Leveque is a listed Haitian artist who is related to Gabriel Leveque, a highly regarded and sought-after Haitian painter. The medium is oil on canvas, mounted on a wood frame, and signed "A Leveque - Haiti". The piece is not dated, but I estimate it was painted in the 1970's - 1980's based on the style and frame. The multicolor scene features vivid shades of blue, green, fiery oranges, yellow and red. The man, woman and pig all have highly expressive faces, characteristic of Leveque's work. This is a larger painting, measuring 24 inches in width and 27 3/4 inches in height. It should be mentioned that the solid wood frame, stained a deep chestnut shade, is very substantial - somewhat heavy and about 1 3/4 inches thick. The canvas picture itself is in good condition with no notable stains, tears or holes. The frame has some normal vintage wear, and it is rustic; the wood on the frame is in good condition with no deep scratches, gouges, or splintering. The picture is firmly mounted on the wood frame and the hanging brackets and wire are secure and sturdy.
