Description: Vintage Iron Art Robert Emig Greek Mythological Tazza - Dimensions are ; 3 1/2" high , 8 5/16" in diameter - Material is cast iron . Mfg is Iron Art This Tazza is a beautiful piece of art simply as an object , as a Tazza it's a gift to functionality. Tazzas have been around for millennia. The ancient Greeks and Roman's used it for all kinds of breads , fruits and other foods. They were often quite large. The concept was amazingly simple - it's a plate or platter that sits on a center stem emerging from a base to balance the weight. It clears room on the table. Of course with any classic vessel it weathered the millennia with hundreds and hundreds of versions and incarnations. Made in marble , bronze , silver , gold , stone there is an endless variety. We have others on this very site. This Tazza ( original is Arabic - 'tassa' , tazzz being in commons use since 1824 ) is of 4 figures from Greek Mythology. Fig 1. is Poseidon/Neptune , seared on a curule chair , holding a trident and holding a vessel from which pours water. Fig 2. is a naked female recline on a hippocamp. Fig 3. is a naked male riding and elaborately finned dolphin and holding a long fishing spear. Fig 4. is most probably the Greek goddess Amphitrite. She holds a decorative trident and is reclining on another elaborately finned dolphin. It is a fascinating piece , as Tazzas often are. Circling the central 4 figures is a delicate filigree work appointed with 4 swans. The manufacturer 'IRON ART' is incuse stamped on the underside. They are objects with an endless capacity for interpretation and decoration but fully functional . The top unscrews from the base and reattaches securely. It should be used but always left for proud display.
