Description: Vintage French Art Deco Plaque, Trivet, Centerpiece, Signed “Verlys”, Aquatic This magnificent “Verlys” plaque, trivet, centerpiece table, with its exquisite aquatic design of seashells and marine plants in the pattern known as “Les Coquillages” (Shells), as shown in the Verlys catalogue circa 1933, is signed in the mold: Verlys France. On the underside, the four largest shells serve as feet. The name Verlys derives from the French region of Andelys, where it was developed, combined with the word “verre”, French for glass. The Holophane company, which copyrighted it’s moulded glass in 1893, developed the Andelys brand. Later bought by the American, J. Mygatt, who opened a branch in the US and the UK, the Andelys brand became very popular with the spread of the Art Deco style and was on the same quality level as Lalique and other important glass makers of the period. In fact, Verlys and Lalique often shared designers such as Pierre D’Avesn who designed the famous Lalique “Serpent” vase. This piece is in excellent condition with the exception of some very tiny “flea bite” chips along the outer edge. Please refer to the detailed photos on this page.
