Description: Vintage French Terracotta Santon from Provence Nativity Figurine, The Old Shepherd, Signed Carbonel This charming vintage French “santon” from Provence, made of terra cotta and hand painted, depicts a traditional character of the Provencal Nativity creche, the old shepherd. Dressed in a traditional Provencal costume, he wears a red belt, a wide cape, a black hat and a red kerchief with white polka dots around his neck. He holds his staff in his hand, his satchel across his shoulder and a canteen on his belt. It is signed “M. Carbonel”, the mark of Marcel Carbonel (1911-2003), one of the most famous names in hand crafted santons in Provence. The Carbonel family established their workshop in the 1930's and it is still in existence.This piece is in very good condition with the exception of signs of age on the surface.
