Lyman Byxbe(1886 – 1980)Lyman Byxbe was one of many great artists who haveturned to the majestic Rocky Mountains for inspiration and the subject matterof their compositions. Born in Pittsfield, Illinois, he began at an early ageto teach himself to draw. He became a successful commercial artist in Omaha,Nebraska, where he studied the art of etching under Mark Levings. In 1938,Byxbe moved to Estes Park, Colorado, where he had a summer studio for manyyears. All of the artist’s time and talent was devoted to copper plate etchingin his mountain studio.Recently in the last few years, Lyman Byxbe hasbeen honored by membership in the Chicago Society of Etchers, Miniature PrintSociety of Kansas City, Missouri, and Northwest Printmakers of Seattle,Washington. He is represented in the permanent collection of the NationalGallery of Arts, at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, D.C., and theLibrary of Congress, at Washington, D.C.
