This book examines the history of California's Spanish missions and the Spanish Catholic missionaries that founded them. The California missions began in the late 18th century as an effort to convert Native Americans to Catholicism and expand European territory. There were 21 missions in all, lasting from 1769 until about 1833. CONDITION: This book is in acceptable condition. The dust jacket has been laminated to the cover and it is worn, ripped, soiled, scuffed, torn, has edge and corner wear. Lamination is peeling off on all of the corners. Pages have turned yellow from age. Previous ownership bookplate affixed to the endpaper at the front of the book. There is also a pen mark on the endpaper at the front of the book. There are stamps from the previous owner on the pastedown endpaper at the front the book and on the endpaper at the front the book. This book is also an ex-library book. It has library markings, a book spine sticker, an 'old school' pocket for the checkout card, and a due date card. There is a small tear on the bottom of page 125. On the right top corner of page 126 tape was probably applied and then removed breaking the first layer of the paper. There are tear on the inner hinge. Please see pictures.
