During that war the Marine Corps was stationed along the DMZ separating North and South Vietnam - the enemy was never far away. That enemy wasn't the Viet Cong that history tells us so much about, but the regular People's Amy of North Vietnam... uniformed combat units that were motivated, highly trained and well equipped. The battles was vicious and costly. Operation Buffalo was just one of those engagements; probably the worst one for the Marines. It was there that the 1/9 Marines earned the moniker "The Walking Dead." It also reveal a shortcoming that hasn't been discussed much since - the Vietnam Marines were not well equipped or supplied. They much preferred to use the Army's artillery which was always spot on and timely, unlike Marine artillery with worn-out guns that was just as likely to fall on the Marines as the NVA. This book is well written using archival official records and statements of the survivors. It will hold your interest.2. The author did a masterful job of describing the horrific fighting along the DMZ in Viet Nam in 1967. Miserably hot, dry weather. Not enough men. Not enough water. Ordered to constantly march and clear various sections of the front between Con Thien and the DMZ where the enemy watched, always knew where the Americans were, and waited until the Marines were exhausted, hungry, thirsty, and fed-up to then launch a well planned ambush. The enemy had liberty to go wherever he wanted. Not the Marines. They were limited to specific zones of operation that were pre-registered (targeted) by NVA artillery. It was a stupid way to fight a war and the Marines on the ground realized it. But it was they the bureaucrats in Washington DC thought it should be fought.
