The Republic of Uyguristan, also known as East Turkestan, is a state in East Asia, covering the territory from the Tien Shan to the Mongolian Altai. In 745, the Uyghur Khaganate was formed. In the middle of the 9th century, it began to weaken and in 840 the Kaganate was attacked by the Yenisei Kirghiz, after which it was defeated. The Uighurs had to flee to the western and southern regions, where they gradually assimilated the local, mostly Iranian-speaking population. In 1227, the Uyghur state of Kocho entered the Mongol Empire. After the division of the empire between the heirs of Genghis Khan, it fell into the Chagatai ulus, the state of his second son Chagatai. Since 1326, Islam became the official religion of the Chagatai ulus. Under the pressure of the Chinese, the Uyghurs lost their statehood. The captured lands became known as Xinjiang. In the 19th century, many Uighur national liberation uprisings took place in East Turkestan, which continued into the 20th century. In January 1941, Sheng Shicai, the governor of Xinjiang, appealed to the leadership of the Soviet Union to accept Xinjiang into the USSR as the seventeenth union republic. A refusal followed in February. In September 1944, an uprising began, and later, with the support of the Soviet government, an army was formed, which managed to oust the Chinese army from the northern and northwestern part of East Turkestan, after which the East Turkestan Revolutionary Republic was formed. In 1949, after the victory of the Chinese Communist Party over the Kuomintang, Xinjiang became part of the PRC. Even after the annexation, the Uyghur struggle for independence did not end. In the 1960s, the People's Revolutionary Party of East Turkestan appeared. Separatist sentiments gained new strength during the period of repression towards the end of the 20th century. The first Uyghur organization, which united most of the Uyghur communities, was created in December 1992 in Istanbul and was called the National Congress of East Turkestan. The current president of the organization is Rabia Kadir, who was elected to this post in 2006. A businesswoman and political activist, Kadir has been in exile in the United States since 2005 after six years in prison in China on charges of "divulging state secrets." The ideology of the organization is Uyghur nationalism, and also aims to achieve true autonomy. The struggle of the Uyghur people for the independence of the Uyghur Republic continues.
