Description: This historic USS Boxer monthly newsletter from September of 1947 is in very good condition and is the very first Edition of "Fantales".The monthly newsletter before the name change to Fantales, was calledBark of the Boxer. The front cover shows a photograph of The Skipper, Captain S.C. Ringand incudes a detailed article on his service. This Historic piece of USS Boxer and post WW II memorabilia will be a treasured keepsake, and a wonderful addition to any WWII/USN collection. The war was officially over at this point, but the "clean up" missions, of the USN in the pacific islands where enemy holdouts were dug in, was still taking place in 1947. This was My Fathers newsletter from when he was stationed on the USS Boxer as a flagman. As he got older, he became prouder of his service in the United States Navy. He told me the story of how after the war, our ships would have to pay visits to the smaller Pacific islands where the enemy were still held up and unaware the war was over. Our Navy would have an interrupter announce over the loudspeakers to those solders still encamped on these islands, that the war was over and to lay down their arms and surrender. At this point, all those still holding out on these islands would fire at the ship, believing that it was a trick. We were not allowed to return fire because the war was officially over at this point. He told me unfortunately that we did suffer casualties due to their actions. Sadly, my Father passed away in May at the age of 96.I have and will be listing more of his US Naval memorabilia from the 1940's and items from the Aircraft carrier he was stationed on, as a flagman, the USS Boxer CV-21This would make a wonderful present for Dad or Granddad or the Military Enthusiast on your Christmas list.
