Todd Webb (1905 - 2000) was an American artist who specialized in straight photography. After losing his wealth in the market crash of 1929, he explored new exploits and passions which led him to photography. Webb joined the Chrysler Camera Club of Detroit in 1938, studying under Ansel Adams and learning the technique of “straight photography.” After moving to New York City, Webb befriended Alfred Stieglitz and Georgia O’Keefe and Beaumont Newhall. Newhall would later curate his first exhibition at the Museum of the City of New York. A world traveler, Webb’s body of work represents a diverse array of subjects and settings. His method of straight photography is marked by wide depths of field, crisply framed for maximum arresting effect. In 2006, over 100 of Webb’s photographs were donated to Nelson-Atkins Museum of Kansas City. Webb’s work has been hosted across numerous museums and galleries; the Getty, the MoMA, the International Center of Photography.
