Description: 2019 Reprint of the 1938 Edition: This volume is the first reprint of the rare Negro Motorist Green Book, a significant guidebook for African American travelers. Originally created and published by African American postal worker Victor Hugo Green, the Green Book was an annual directory for Black road trippers from 1936 to 1966, a period marked by Jim Crow laws and widespread racial discrimination. At a time when African Americans were often denied access to restaurants, hotels, and other services due to institutionalized racism, the Green Book offered a safe travel guide, highlighting businesses and accommodations that welcomed Black patrons. Though African American car ownership was limited by poverty and racial barriers, the rising Black middle class embraced automobile travel as a way to avoid segregation and the dangers of public transportation. Green’s guide began in New York but eventually expanded to cover much of North America, helping African Americans navigate their journeys and avoid discriminatory treatment along the way. In addition to the book, Green also established a travel agency to further assist Black travelers. The Green Book became particularly important for Black Americans employed in fields such as sports, entertainment, and sales, who frequently traveled for work. As author George Schuyler noted in 1930, “all Negroes who can do so purchase an automobile as soon as possible in order to be free of discomfort, discrimination, segregation, and insult.” After the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which made the racial discrimination addressed by the Green Book illegal, the publication ceased. However, it has experienced a resurgence of interest in the 21st century, as scholars and historians examine the experiences of Black travelers during the Jim Crow era.
