It is about the ass of the Bible, the donkey of the English, and the burro of the Mexican. My interest in the burro began many years ago-more years than I care to record! It started during my first year at the two-room elementary school in Kenna, New Mexico, about three miles north of our little ranch home. My father had purchased two burros, a dark brown one and a gray one, for the pleasure of my sister, my two brothers, and me. Perhaps the greatest, and no doubt the most lasting, educational achievement of my first school year was the knowledge I gained from Ted, the brown burro, while my sister and I tried to ride him to school. While gentle and kind, Ted seemed to have doubts about the importance of the educational process, for too often he would make us late for school. This introduction to the burro, while at times exasperating, gave me a hint of the animal's insistence upon his right to determine the proper rate of speed for his travels. My experiences with Ted and with other burros that have crossed my path both here and abroad have, I believe, qualified me to tell something about them. I have long since come to respect their loyalty, sturdiness, and patience and to enjoy and even admire their idiosyncrasies. To support my own observations, I have spent many years in research on the history of the little animal. I have tried to indicate his historical importance in helping men on the road to what we call civilization. My main purpose has been to upgrade the burro in the minds of men. More often than not he has been the underdog among domesticated animals. I have tried to demonstrate that he is not stupid or stubborn, or even odd-looking, as many unknowing persons have claimed. It is my hope that the reader will come to understand that the burro possesses many sterling qualities, among them an intelligence too often overlooked. I encountered many difficulties in uncovering the history of the burro. Records are scanty, and, though he has been around for a long time, he has often been taken for granted or ignored. There-fore, figuratively speaking, a spade (a prospector's implement, by the way) was essential in digging for the fragments. Those bits and pieces of information were uncovered in various sources at many different times and in many places. I extend thanks to the personnel of a number of public and institutional libraries for their efforts in behalf of my research, as well as to persons who were kind enough to allow me access to their private collections. Acquaintances have graciously assisted me, and individuals whom I have never met personally but only through correspondence have contributed greatly to this book. A goodly portion of my information has come to me through personal letters, whose writers are acknowledged in the text. Illustrations have been provided by individuals, museums, art galleries, personnel of the United States Foreign Service, and information services of many foreign governments. Former colleagues of mine who were engaged with me in work abroad have also provided illustrative material. Special appreciation goes to the editors of the University of Oklahoma Press, who were patient with me in my efforts and provided constructive criticism. My warmest thanks and gratitude go to my wife, Florence, who courageously and patiently read my longhand script of the first draft, offered suggestions, and then typed the final manuscript.
