Description: Pass of the North (1581 - 1917), Four Centuries on the Rio Grande by C. L. Sonnichsen with map and chapter initials by Jose Cisneros. Texas Western Press/The University of Texas at El Paso, 1968. 467 page presumed first edition hardcover with edge wear and tear on spine of jacket - otherwise near flawless condition with no interior markings or other glaring flaws. Includes original seven page typewritten manuscript with visible white out correction fluid marks and handwritten notations in Sonnichsen's handwriting (see photos). Four centuries and more have gone by since Alvar Nunez Cabeza de Vaca crossed the Rio Grande somewhere within sight of Mount Franklin. The year was 1536. In 1981 it will be four hundred years since Brother Agustin Rodriguez, the first European to visit the unknown hands beyond the Pass of the North, looked speculatively at the pools and swamps near where we live now and decided the place would be good for farming. Incredible things have happened during those centuries the early ones were terribly dangerous and difficult for the generations of Spaniards and Indians who maintained a precarious foothold on the banks of the Great River. A sense of history develops easily in a place where so much has happened - where so many unusual human beings have played such wonderful parts on such a tremendous stage. It adds up to a remarkable story - a story that should be told - a reminder in a rootless age of the deep roots of one community. It must be a tale of two cities, for El Paso is part Mexican, and Juarez is more American than it sometimes likes to admit. The river brought them both to life. They could not do without each other. This is the story of how they came to be, how they grew, and how they changed from the old days to the new. $5.85 domestic U.S. shipping. Payment must be received within 24 hours of sale.
