I heard this unusual trio - where Lloyd is accompanied by Indian tabla master Zakir Hussain and Eric Harland, the fine drummer in Lloyds regular quartet - at the 2004 Berlin Jazz festival. The groups blend of flowing, sensuous rhythm, subtly conceived dynamics and heart-on-sleeve testifying had the audience baying for more. The superbly recorded seventy five minutes of Sangam document a live May 2004 performance at Santa Barbaras Lobero Theatre, which is every bit as engaging as I recall that Berlin concert to have been. Lloyd is in terrific form on all his horns, including tenor, alto and various flutes: he also plays some fine piano from time to time (as does Harland) The depth and range of interaction between Husssain and Harland is such that one never misses the contributions that regular employment of a fourth, harmonically-oriented instrumentalist might have brought to music that seems to emerge from some infinitely deep and refreshing well of archetypal East-West resource and import.
