Description: Abstract Expressionist / Colorist painting, “Birds of Paradise”, by Samuel Kamen (Am., 1911-95). Signed, unframed painting measures 26 1/8 x 20 1/8 inches.A Who Was Who In American Art listed artist, Kamen's paintings sell for as much as 700 USD at auction. Kamen worked in Montauk, East Hampton, The Hamptons, Long Island; the Glacier Bay area of southeastern Alaska; and, from his home in Brooklyn, New York City. Painting ships flat, not rolled.Kamen's work is Abstract Expressionist, but more objective than the work of his fellow Art Students League (ASL) alumnus Jackson Pollock (the two men were born in 1911 and 1912 respectively). Kamen was like Willem de Kooning in that they weren’t non-objective. de Kooning would include women in his paintings and here we see Kamen’s included birds.Provenance: From a select collection of paintings by Samuel Kamen that were kept in a 41 x 31 inch art storage box and discovered in NJ. Some of the paintings from the collection have areas of impasto (thicker paint) although I'm unsure if it's oil, water or synthetic based paint (or perhaps a mixed media combination)? Interestingly, Jackson Pollock painted with synthetic resin-based gloss enamel paint or "house paint".Signed "Kamen" lower left. Undated, but second half of 20th century, Mid-century Modern period. Condition : Painting on paper (thick paint but possibly acrylic or gouache) in good condition. On the reverse you may find random paint, tape, older tape or hinging, tape residue, paper damage from where tape used to be, etc.Kamen was a Member of: The Brooklyn Society of Artists, Inter-Society Color Council, Artists Equity Association, and American Watercolor Society. He exhibited many times with/at such venues as: Allied Artists of America, The National Academy of Design, The American Watercolor Society, and the Brooklyn Society of Artists (Brooklyn Museum). One of Kamen's awards was from American Artist Magazine in 1954.Aside from his work as a painter, Kamen designed Modern furniture, rugs and ceramics. Background: See American Artist Magazine, Jan., 1955 "The Watercolors of Samuel Kamen". During the 1960's and into the 1980's, Kamen worked closely with his wife Edith Segal. Segal was a well known author / poet and her works were praised by the likes of Langston Hughes. She did a lot of work in the field of children's literature. For biographical reference see: Tales For Little Rebels: A Collection of Radical Children's Literature.Samuel Kamen was Edith Segal's third and final husband. Some of the books that Kamen illustrated for Segal include: Come With Me: Poems, Guessing Poems and Dance Poems For Young People (1963); Poems And Songs For Dreamers Who Dare (1975); and, A Time To Thunder and Other Poems (1984). Kamen won acclaim for his artwork during this UNICEF Friends period and his paintings were exposed to a wide audience.
