The First Kuban Campaign of the Volunteer Army began on a frosty February night in 1918. On March 15, the army approached the village of Novodmitrievskaya. It was here that the second name of the campaign was born – “Ice”. It had been raining all night before and the next morning. The people were soaking wet and trudging through deep mud. By midday, the wind blew and it began to snow. There was a river ahead, and a village beyond it. General Markov’s officer regiment began to cross. Frost hit, a blizzard began. Their clothes, which had become an icy shell, constrained any movement.Markov and his regiment found themselves alone in front of the village. The other units were just crossing. The choice was to freeze in the field or take the village and save the army. Markov rushed into the attack. The village was taken, and on March 27 the army reached Yekaterinodar… By order of General Denikin, a special badge was established for all participants in the campaign: a crown of thorns with a sword on a St. George ribbon and with a rosette of national colors on it.
