Description: Presented for your your consideration, an adorable Russian Gzhel (Delft) Blue & White Porcelain Cow Figurine Made In Russia. Gzhel is a type of Russian “Delft” produced in its namesake village of Gzhel, East of Moscow. This region has been renowned for the quality of its clay since the 14th century. The word “Gzhel” possesses an alliterative association with the Russian word for “burn.” The vast forests of Gzhel provided a seemingly endless supply of wood to feed the kilns. The early 18th century ushered the production of porcelain and “semi-faience” a faience decorated with transparent glazes as opposed to true faience with opaque glazes. These “semi-faience” pieces were decorated with a cobalt based glaze that achieved the rich blue of Dutch Delftwares. The Gzhel style of applying glazes is obviously influenced by Dutch techniques although through the centuries distinctly Russian aesthetics evolved in the decorations. Listing Description An adorable figurine, this stylised cow is rendered in the the silhouette of a cowbell with its tapered blocky form and bail handle. The rich saturated cobalt oxide based glaze contrasts boldly with the white base colour. Simple brushstrokes decorate the piece in the manner of Dutch Delftware. A happy little bovine, her tail wags contentedly and she bears a winsome smile with exaggerated pouty lips. At the bottom the piece bears a stamped hallmark.
