Description: This is the only piece of official paperwork from the Kingdom of Hawaii that I’ve ever come across. The Seaman’s Permit was a kind of travel visa demonstrating a sailor had been discharged from his ship’s duties and to grant leave to be in Hawaii — in this case Honolulu, Oahu. In this instance, it was issued to Charles H Munn, sailor on the BK Louisiana who was discharged by the Captain of that ship on Sept 17, 1851. I believe the Captain’s name to be Thomas B Clough. There’s a second signature that appears to be a Joseph Maugham — but I’m not sure why it’s there or if that’s the name. Perhaps both signatures were required. The condition is fair. It was clearly folded up and kept in the sailor’s pocket. You can see which part was exposed from the discoloration on the back. I’ve examined it closely, and do not believe that line to be a repair. It’s just worn along the crease. If you have any questions at all, please contact me. Otherwise, this is a great opourtinity to own a very rare piece of Hawaiiana.
