Description: Roman Byzantine | AE Nomisma Weight Reference: Cf. Bendall, Weights 104 Date: c. 400-500 CE Obverse: Large punch-engraved N ; a single pellet in lower field and four in upper field Reverse: Blank Size: 12.1 mm Weight: 4.21 grams The engraved "N" on the obverse stands for the denomination of this weight, one nomisma. The nomisma was a standard Roman unit of weight equal to ~4.5 grams. It was used in reference to coinage, and its weight was the same as the same weight of a contemporary gold solidus. This weight was used in the marketplace, 1500-1600 years ago in order to ensure that the coinage used to pay for a transaction was the proper weight and to detect counterfeits.
