This is a 1970's replica of a mid 1800's California 50 Dollar Slug that back then was made of real gold. The one up for sale here now is made of base metal and then colored a gold tone as is the chain. A very interesting and unique item showing what coins were like in the earlier Civil War era United States. The chain alone is worth the price. The copy is roughly the same size as the old real coin.
