Description: VERY RARE! Berlin iron. Cast iron . Base: Ornate pediment in rectangle. Ornamentation: A coal carrier boy. Made after the design of Simeon Pierre Devaranne (1789-1859) by the Royal Prussian Iron Foundry in Berlin (Gleiwitz) around 1840. This is one of Devaranne's so called "Berliner Strassentype" figures a coal carrier boy. No marks on bottom. (as usual of this type of castings.) It retains its original dark green finish and its bronzed or gilded finish on the boy's baskets. This was used as a Vesta or match safe, a fireside item. The back basket acts as a match striker. This is a museum quality piece! height: 15 cm . Width: 8 cm, Length: 8 cm. Condition: In very good antique condition. One of its small basket is missing. See images for details. Item was treated with renaissance wax which has been used by museums-including the British Museum- across the world.
