Description: Antique/Vintage Boxed Stencil Set Half Inch c.1920s+ (Another larger set also available - see our Other listings) The set consists of 75 pieces plus the brush and box. Two of every letter uppercase except Q,X,Z of which there is one. (The set is not missing a Q, X and Z, as they are little used letters only one of each was deemed necessary to complete the set). £ s d. (Pounds Shilling and Pence) which proves the set was made pre decimal. (pre 1966 and most likely made in the 1920s if not before). The £ sign began use in England as early as 1661. In the case of the letters s and d it is generally agreed that these stand for the Latin words solidus and denarius, originally Roman. The first use of these abbreviations to indicate shillings and pence given in the Oxford English Dictionary is dated even earlier at 1387. There are numbers 123456789 & 10. Also 2 full stops, 2 apostrophes, 1/4, 1/2, 3/4, and 2 blanks and 2 ends. All the pieces are Brass. They all interlock to enable signs to be made quickly, and they are easy to assemble, use, clean and dismantle. The brass stencils are accompanied by a stiff, short-haired, black ox hair brush applicator, with lathe-turned Wooden Handle and Copper Ferrule. The brush is original to the set. The Wood box is beautifully made with box joints all around, I have photographed it in 'as found' condition so you can view it as I acquired it. The signage on the box is made from the brass stencils inside. Should you want it polished before delivery, just let me know and I will Wax & Polish. Box Measures: 27cm x 9.5cm x 7.3cm high. Stencils present a half inch print. (I have another stencil set from the same source that is a 1" print that is listed separately. It is definitely a partner to this one, exactly the same only larger 1" print pieces) Weight: 516g. CONDITION: In excellent original used condition and showing wear consistent with age and use. There is no damage and no faults.
