Description: Rare obsolete original insignia for the Afghan army paratroopers from the Soviet intervention era. Metal wings which measure approximately 2 1/2” across. These are 4th Class, Type 3. (Type 3 is the third design of the Afghan parachutist badge, having rounded and curved wings), from the Democratic Republic of Afghanistan which existed from approximately 1978 to 1992. This was given to new Paratrooper recruits.. With the arrival of the Soviet instructors in 1979, the Afghan army commando force rapidly expanded to form the 444th and 666th brigades in Kabul. The 37th Brigade and then the 38th Brigade, based in Parwan, followed. The 26th Independent Airborne Battalion mutinied against the Soviets and were crushed. There are 3 types of parachute badges, each from the different eras of Afghan government. Type 1 was the first design of the Afghan parachutist badge being of very poor quality and issued by the Kingdom of Afghanistan from 1964 to 1973. Type 2 was the second design and issued by the Republic of Afghanistan from 1973 to 1978. Type 3 is the one listed from 1978 to 1992. The current Afghanistan military does not have any Airborne units. You are buying the material pictured. This is a hobby not a living, so I try to keep it fun, otherwise why do it.
