Description: First three images show details of stock plants flowering in California. Final two images show details of plants offered for sale. These are vigorous, recently potted, but rooted divisions. Planted in pure NZ sphagnum in 3.5" pots. Overall plant heights ~18". For bromeliad growers, pitcairnias usually evoke huge, very spiny and space-hogging plants whose attractive flowers are often "lost in the weeds". There are actually quite a few smaller, spineless species with very showy inflorescences that make for great companion plants for other tropicals. This very rare and enigmatic species, Pitcairnia heerdeae, is one of the best of them. Very free flowering, spine-free and quite harmless, and easy to grow in intermediate and cool conditions. Unusual bract color with pure white flowers. Apparently only collected a couple of times since its discovery in the late 1980s, its exact origin in the Cundinamarca Department of central Colombia remains a mystery. My original plants came in on trade from a well-respected Dutch bromeliad collection ex-an EU botanical garden, and it remains extremely rare in cultivation. A real jewel for bromeliad and rare ornamental plant collectors who can provide good water quality and an intermediate temperature range. Once established, these plants will offset freely and flower at least twice a year. All plants offered are greenhouse grown on benches in the San Francisco Bay Area, California.
