The pillars of Hercules frame two worlds, symbolizing and celebrating the New and Old Worlds Spain had conquered in the past two hundred years. They represent the Straits of Gibraltar over the waves of the sea with the Latin warning: PLUS ULTRA meaning, "Spain owns all that is beyond the oceans". The inscription reads: "utra que unum" meaning "both worlds are one" and the [Date]. The obverse bears a simplified coat of arms of the Bourbon dynasty, and reads "[King's name and Ordinal]", followed by the initials "D.G." for Dei Gratia (By the Grace of God), "Hispanarum Rex" (King of Spain), "ET IND REX" (and the Indies).
