Description: Peer Gynt by Henrik Ibsen, George G.Harrap & Co., 1936. Illustrated and signed by Arthur Rackham. DESCRIPTION: Limited edition of 460 copies signed by Arthur Rackham. Quarto (10 1/2 x 7 3/4 inches; 266 x 198 mm). 255 pages. Twelve color plates with captioned tissue guards and numerous smaller B & W illustrations and decorations throughout the text. This copy has been rebound in modern full vellum, preserving the original gilt-stamped portions of the original binding from the front board and spine, which are then inlaid in place (see photos). The original pictorial endpapers printed in brown have been preserved. Introduction by R. Farquharson Sharp, the translator, who chose to employ unrhymed verse to keep as close to the original meaning of the play. The book is protected with a clear archival Grafix Dura Lar dustwrapper and housed in a custom clamshell box (see final four photos). CONDITION: The front cover is slightly 'sprung', i.e., slightly bowed (concave) with the front edge moving approx. 1/2 inch away from the text block (see photos of top edge). This is a common finding in books with bindings of vellum over stiff boards due to aging, drying and shrinking of the vellum which then pulls upon the underlying board, retracting and bowing it. The interior text pages, illustrations and captioned tissue guards are all in fine condition without foxing or toning. No ex-libris or writing. DISCUSSION: This is a classic private press book from the Golden Age of Illustrations and one of Arthur Rackham's final works before dying of cancer in1939. Rackham had a gift for portraying fantastical creatures, making this one of his most successful illustrated books. It is in highly collectible condition and the it is favorably priced to reflect the rebinding and slight concavity of the front cover.
