In 2005 he was awarded the Creative New Zealand Berlin Writers Residency, and later completed a PhD at the University of Auckland on aesthetic theory. In 2015, he was Writer in Residence at Victoria University of Wellington. He lives in Wellington with his partner and their twin daughters.
