Description: Original Confederate Imprint Richmond, VA 1862 Doc. No. XVIII (18) Virginia General Assembly Parrish & Willingham (4396) Documents 1861-62 Biennial Report of the Board of Directors of the Eastern Lunatic Asylum. Established in 1773 as the first Insane Asylum in the Colonies at Williamsburg, VA.Report by the Board to Governor John Letcher Oct. 30, 1861. 31 page report on the finances of the Institution. Dr. John M Galt was an important advocate for the benevolent treatment of mental illness or insanity. Progress had been made until after the Civil War.(Union troops took control of the hospital and the patients were largely ignored). Dr. Galt was severely depressed by the treatment of the patients an died from an overdose of Laudanum. 11 page report from Dr. Galt, the Superintendent and Physician in which he elaborates on the current state of the medical profession and its attempt to understand mental illness and incorporate it into general medical treatment. Many other interesting observations in his letter as well. Included many charts relating to the status of the patients such as county of origin, gender, age, reason for admission, profession, etc. Supposed causes of insanity are listed such as intemperance, loss of property, excess labor and others. Condition of the document is very good, minor toning. All pages bound in at the edge, but partially detached. Has a blind stamp of the Masonic Library in Roanoke, Virginia on the cover page.
