Description: First three images show plant habit, along with leaf and flower details on my specimen plant. Images four and five show the plants offered for sale, flowering sized, recently established in fresh NZ AAAA sphagnum in 3.5" rose pots. Neotropical blueberries, long the exclusive province of large public botanical gardens, have slowly made their way into the collection of rare plant specialists in the U.S. With a few commonly cultivated exceptions, most recent introductions are novelties for most ornamental plant growers. Their handsome foliage and stunning flowers have made them popular in a relatively short period of time. The plants offered are multigenerational propagations of a small rooted stem cutting of Oreanthes hypogaeus (syn. Semiramisia hypogaea) that was gifted to me eight years back by a commercial source in South America that is aware of my interest in New World – and especially Andean – Ericaceae. As far as I am aware this species is known in nature from a single high elevation locality (~8,500-9,000') in the Zamora-Chinchipe Province of Ecuador. Despite its rarefied origin, it has proven to be simple to cultivate under intermediate to cool conditions. Can be grown to specimen size in a 6" container. A prostrate terrestrial in nature, it is suitable as a ground cover in large terraria as well as in a hanging basket. Plants produce single 1.75" flowers in the late summer and early fall that dangle from mature stems, that also produce wire-like tendrils that dangle from containers. The leaves themselves are incredible, and exceptionally succulent for a member of this family. Leaves shown in the images above have been dried out over the previous month to stimulate flowering. When plumped up they are double convex in cross section. Considered Threatened in nature, this easy-to-grow species is currently known to be cultivated at a single botanical garden. All plants offered are greenhouse grown on benches in the San Francisco Bay Area, California.
