The painting depicts women jailed in Salem during the Witch Trials which was intriguing and a must have for me, but I was also drawn to the haunted activity going on above the women... The three women depicted are two black women and one white woman. The women are supposed to be, one of them Tituba, the black slave woman who taught the young girls witchcraft, and the white woman, probably Sarah Good. But what I also love is above the women, I see several Witch figures and Flying Witch above the women...see pics #5, 6, 11, 12, 13 & 16 and something weird to the right top corner seen in pic #15. About the Witch Salem Trials:On February 29, 1692, the first warrant was issued for the arrest of Sarah Good, Sarah Osborne, and Tituba. The three were accused initially of afflicting Betty Parris and Abigail Williams, and later many other accusers came forward to testify about injurious actions and spectral evidence against Good.All three women were considered social outcasts, albeit for different reasons. Tituba was an enslaved woman for Samuel Parris and his family; she and Sarah Good were both poor women, whereas Osborne was not. Osborne had not attended church in almost three years due to a long illness that was suspected to be depression, and was still dealing with legal issues with the Putnam family. I didn't find an artist signature on the front and never removed the cardboard in back to inspect it for a signature. In good condition for age and use; minor paint loss and scuffs.
