Photos 6 and 7 show The map of the ALCAN Highway which was built at the rate of 8 miles a day during World War II, to counter any invasion by Japanese forces. The Japanese in a propaganda broadcast thanked American Workers for opening a way the Japanese Troops to invade the United States. Rather than forging a more direct route to Alaska, planners linked existing airfields at Fort St. John, Fort Nelson, the town of Whitehouse, Yukon and Watson Lake which is a town in Yukon Canada, located at mile 635 on the Alaska Highway close to the British Columba border. The town is named for Frank Watson, an American born trapper and prospector who settle in the area at the end of the 19th Century. The tourist attraction in Watson Lake include the Northern Lights Space and Science Center and the much imitated original Sign Post Forest which was started in 1942 by a homesick United States Army Corps of Engineer, G.I. working on the Alaska Highway who put a sign with the name of his home town the distance to it. Private Clark J, Lindley, servicing with the 341st Engineers was ordered to repair a road sign that was damaged by a bulldozer. The G.I. decided to personalize the job by adding a sign pointing to his home town, Danville, Illinois and giving the distance to it. Several other people added directions to their home towns and the idea has been snowballing ever since. Photos 8 and 9 show where the National Geographic put their own picture of the Sign Post Forest, on pages 79 and 80. It shows tourist, Lillian Nedohin, from Rycroft, Alberta was looking for a sign to her home town and found it. Shelf # 16.
