Description: Meriania nobilis is a small evergreen tree in the Melastomataceae family. Its native range is in Columbia. Familiar names include Motley Meriania, Manacá Colombiano, Meriania, Amarrabollo, and Amaraboyo. They grow naturally in the Columbian Andes mountains at 3,300-9,500 feet. It is considered one of the Worlds most beautiful trees for its year-round display of flowers. You can grow this one in a well-drained pot and slightly acidic. It is best if it does not experience a frost or warmer temperatures over 85F. It can grow to be 20 feet tall but may be trimmed back to a bush. The leaves are relatively large with a shiny topside, and prominent veins pop out on the underside. The flowers come in light pink, lavender, purple, and red colors. They are in bloom all year long in the correct environment. The flowers are 3 inches in diameter with showy yellow anthers. It prefers to grow in full sun to part shade with average water needs. Zones 10-11 Germination Mix equal parts of potting soil, vermiculite, and peat moss. Press the seeds down into the media. Spread some long-fibered sphagnum moss on top of the potting media. Mist with a spray bottle. Uncover and mist as needed to keep the media moist. Cover the seed tray with clear plastic to maintain a 64-75F. Place under a bright indirect light until germination.
