Starting his first game on May 15, he made national news with his great pitching and antics on the mound. He did groundskeeping on the mound, talked to the baseball, and other things. And he won. A Monday Night Baseball game in Tiger Stadium against the Yankees drew 47,855 and a national audience. He won 5-1 in a short well pitched complete game. The postgame interview made him known around the country. Fidrych would be named to start the 1976 All-Star Game in Philadelphia, go 19-9 and lead the league in ERA. That got him the American League Rookie of the Year Award in a fairy tale season. He was a 2-time All-Star before injuries began to take their toll. After his rookie season, Fidrych was just 10-10 1977-80, finishing 29-19 for his career. Comebacks failed and he retired to drive a truck as a small-town hero. A fatal accident while repairing his truck ended his life in tragedy at the age of 54. For a magical summer, Major League Baseball was all about 'The Bird'. Detroit fans now look to Tarik Skubal to be their pitching hero, and so far, he's been gold.
