Description: Vintage etching of an iconic place in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado, titled in pencil lower left margin "Thompson Canyon", signed lower right in pencil by noted Colorado artist Lyman Byxbe (1886-1980). The unframed sheet measures 9 1/2" by 8 1/4". Byxbe is a popular artist closely associated with Colorado's high country. Born in Illinois, he was showed early talent, studying etching in Nebraska. By 1938 he had moved to scenic Estes Park, Colorado; Thompson Canyon is a major entry from the high plains through to Estes Park. A scenic highway cuts through it. The canyon was flooded catastrophically in July, 1976, when 144 people lost their lives. Byxbe is best known for his widely-dispersed black and white etchings of Colorado peaks and scenery, though he did work in other media. The print likely dates from about 1950 to the early 1960's most likely. Condition is excellent. The piece is lightly taped at top edge in two places; brown paper on other three edges is just that; piece is NOT laid down on board. I am not clear how the brown paper came to be there but it can be trimmed off is so desired; there is no evidence of it on the reverse side.
