Description: Timor Pattern Flow Blue Chinoiserie Plate, Keller & Guerin C.1891. This richly ornamented 19th Century plate was made by Keller & Guerin in Luneville, France and displays an Oriental design called “Timor” that actually tells a story. The story is from a Chinese play first written in the 13th Century and has had numerous rewritings and title changes throughout its history. The play is most often referred to as, The Romance of the Western Chamber. The story, at a time when marriages were arranged, is about a young couple consummating their love without parental approval. At the center of this sumptuous, flow blue and polychrome Transferware plate we see a scene from the play where the suiter is scaling the garden wall to court the beautiful lady within. He has dropped his boots to the ground is about to swing from a nearby tree to land near his secret love. An interesting depiction in this scene is the attempt to indicate a “night time” meeting by the drawing just above the lady’s head of a constellation and partial moon. Unique and charming! The border of the “Timor” pattern features 3 cartouche with a scroll edge and a large partial flower head, interspersed with floral garlands with reflective gold glaze. Setting off the border are the dark flow blue, geometric designs that add to the oriental feel. The entire plate design is transfer printed, then hand painted with vivid colors, glazed and fired for permanence.SIZE: 6.5” across.MARKS: In blue underglaze: Timor, K & G, Luneville, France (some of the blue marks are partial). There are also impressed marks and a faint signature in green underglaze.
