Description: 16.00 800x600 Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 Artist: Tsukioka Yoshitoshi Title: Buddhist Monk - Tsuki Hyakushi # 93 Buddhist monk receives cassia seeds on a moonlit night From the series Tsuki hyaku sugata 月百姿 (One Hundred Aspects of the Moon) Date: June, 1891 Yoshitoshi was probably the best artist of Ukiyo-e in Japan during the Meiji period as Japan encountered the Western World, and his renditions are more energetic and realistic than traditional prints, reflecting those changing times. Japanese legend had it that eight magical cassia trees (katsura) grew on the moon; here a Buddhist holy man holds out his begging bowl to collect the falling seeds which are desired for their magical properties. The monk’s upper robe is decorated with a dragon medallion which implies Chinese association; the lower with lotus blossoms which represented purity. An enlightened monk was usually portrayed with a halo around his head but here the moon suggests its presence. Also note that the characters in the cartouches are in a Chinese calligraphy rather than the usual Japanese style. This is an original print from 1891. It bears the artist's signature and seal and engraver's name, and dates from June,1891. Size is Oban, borders partly trimmed as shown; actual dimensions approx. 13” x 9-1/4” or 330mm x 235mm. Print is unbacked with virtually no perceptible wear or soiling. Print is crisp with strong colors and no fading; only a little yellowing due to age. No pinholes, creases, tears, tape marks, etc. Excellent gauffrage (embossed texture) and burnishing (see picture for detail of monk's bowl). Grain from the woodblock is evident but not pronounced. The design of this print used powdered brass pigment on the long scarf which reacted with the moisture in the air and often caused staining – this print does not appear to have that problem. Although trimmed of its margins at top, bottom and right, it retains the left margin with original notations, censor’s seals, etc. Slight issues a top left and upper right edges. THE FINE PRINT: I have done my best to describe and illustrate the condition of the item. This is sold as-is, so be sure to ask all your questions before you bid; otherwise I reserve the right to make a reasonable determination as to the resolution of any problems. Typos are exactly that, and are not binding - an unintentional error on my part or yours does not change the terms of the auction.
