Description: Reproduction of a modern painting by Jack Vettriano (UK) "The Singing Butler" , oil painting on canvas . Size 50 by 40 cm (19,6 by 15,7 inches) A self-taught artist from Scotland, Jack Vettriano simply took the art world by storm and turned it upside down. His painting "The Singing Butler", called bad taste by critics, was sold at an auction in Edinburgh for $ 1.34 million, and the number of mugs and postcards with its image that were sold is generally incalculable. He entered the list of the most expensive artists in Britain and broke the record for prices for Scottish painting. Vettriano's style is defined as romantic figurative art and narrative art. Bright colors and clear figures in his paintings make them look like photographs taken on a fine day on a very high-sensitivity film. Jack Hoggan (this is the artist's real surname) was born in 1953 in Scotland, in a family of a miner, and first began to paint when he was 21 years old. At that time, he was inspired by famous masters, whose works the aspiring self-taught artist copied in local museums. This was his art school, but he did not receive any special education. For 14 long years, Jack painted for himself and only in 1988 did he risk presenting his paintings to the public, presenting a couple of his canvases for the first time at the annual exhibition at the Royal Scottish Academy. To the amazement of the organizers, the paintings of an unknown artist were bought out on the very first day. Hoggan was showered with very flattering offers from gallery owners and wealthy art lovers. Soon he moved to Edinburgh, taking as a pseudonym a slightly modified surname of his Italian mother Vettriano. In the following years, interest in his work grew rapidly, and in 1992, the artist's first solo exhibition took place under the intriguing title "Tales of Love and Other Stories". It was followed by numerous exhibitions in London, Hong Kong, Johannesburg and New York. Collectors actively "voted with their wallets", wanting to become the owners of the originals of Vettriano's works. Now his works are in the private collections of Jack Nicholson, Sir Tim Rice, Robbie Coltrane and others. It is interesting that Jack Vettriano earns more income than the originals themselves from reproductions of his paintings, as well as from replicating his images on postcards, art posters and tea mugs. The artist's style is in great demand among those whose state of mind is in tune with Vettriano's romantic worldview, who are able to "finish drawing" in their imagination the moments and characters embodied in his works. "When people sit on the sofa in the evening, they always like to imagine that it is themselves dancing" - this is what the artist himself said about "The Singing Butler". Surprisingly, Vettriano's works were never acquired by British galleries. Among artists and art critics, his work was not taken seriously. It was believed that his works were not original and did not represent artistic value. Perhaps it is difficult to find another modern artist who was treated with such obvious disdain and ridicule. Richard Cork, a well-known London critic, also did not see anything special in Vettriano's works, however, he admitted that his success became a noticeable cultural phenomenon. And really, are there many such talented artists whose works became popular far beyond the borders of Great Britain during their lifetime? Check out my other items!
