ID'd CIVIL WAR CONFEDERATE KILLED IN ACTION 2ND MARYLAND INFANTRY 1860S CDV

Description: Original signed CDV of James Winder Laird, son of William Winder and Wilhelmina E. Goldsborough Laird. Born October 20, 1838, in Cambridge, Maryland, and killed in battle of the Weldon Railroad August 18, 1864. Adjutant of the Second Volunteer MD Infantry. Signed in light pen on the mount below the image. This was out of the Dr. Goldsborough family album. CDV is 4" x 2.5" in VG overall condition with trimmed corners, minor losses and very slight lifting of the albumen edges, mostly bottom-right, bottom. Some period writing in pencil on the back: "For Mrs. Dr. Goldsborough with my kindest regards". An interesting note about the Dr. Goldsborough he is referring to: Dr. Charles E. Goldsborough was 27 years old when he joined the 5th Maryland Infantry at the start of the war. During the Gettysburg campaign, Goldsborough was captured by his own brother, Major William Goldsborough of the 2nd Maryland Infantry, C.S.A. After his release from prison, Goldsborough was assigned duty at a Union prison in Delaware. To his surprise, there he found a wounded William along with his other brother, Eugene--both captured Confederate soldiers. Boxed & signed Priority Mail shipping. 7777A
