LA FAYETTE AT CASTLE GARDEN, NEW YORK 16 AUGUST 1824. Impressed Clews Staffordshire Crown hallmark on back. Flowers and leaves encircle the plate. At center are ships and a fort. It was President Monroe who invited LaFayette to the United States to celebrate the "Spirit of 1776" and the 50th anniversary of the United States. Circa: 1830. Brothers Ralph and James Clews rented a pottery works in Staffordshire in 1815 and began producing high quality, blue transfer wares until their partnership ended in 1834.
