More about this stamp - As the last stamp issued in 1997, the USPS released The Mars Pathfinder Priority Mail stamp in Pasadena, California. This stamp is the largest that the USPS ever made for regular postage. The Pathfinder successfully landed on Mars on July 4, 1997. This stamp shows the first image sent back to earth, that of the remote-controlled vehicle. Called the Sojourner, this vehicle collected data about the Martian soil and rocks. In order to combat counterfeiting, the hidden words "USPS" and "MARS PATHFINDER JULY 4, 1997" were incorporated into the design. A bit more history: The United States Post Office issued its first stamp on July 1, 1847. Since that time, over 5000 stamps have been released. Each stamp is given its own identification number called a Scott Number. This stamp has been designated as Scott Number 3178.
