In sandy soil, it can be covered with 1" of soil maximum. Water thoroughly. They are easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained soil of average fertility and shade to dappled shade. Morning sun is okay. They don't mind poor soils, but will not grow in salty soils. Once established, they tolerate dry soil conditions, but do best with in a moist soil. Maintenance is minimal.
