Description: Gene Austin (1900 - 1972) was a popular composer, screen, radio & recording artist. His career spanned from the mid 1920's into the early 1970's. He was known as "the voice of the south land" and a pioneer In the "crooning" style of singing. A jazz artist at heart, he was equally at home singing country ballads, blues and spirituals. One of his most popular songs was "My Blue Heaven". This was recorded several times throughout his career and sold over five million copies worldwide. In the early 1930's, Austin formed a trio with bassist Johnny Candido and guitarist Otto Heimel. They called themselves "Gene Austin and his Candy and Coco". The group proved extremely successful with Candy and Coco developing a unique sense of comedy that audiences loved. They had a radio series from 1932 to 1934.. Many of the Radio Transcriptions in Encore 5 to Encore 7 have these 2 musicians as Gene's backup. The collaboration with Candy and Coco lasted till the early 1940's. Gene Austin CD's Encore 4 to Encore 8 includes a very unusual group of recordings. Encore 8 includes his recordings made in 1939.
