Description: Franklin Library leather edition of John Updike's "Roger's Version," one of the SIGNED FIRST EDITION series, published in 1986. Bound in royal blue leather, the book has decorative paper end leaves, a satin book marker, Symth-sewn binding, hubbed spine, gold gilding on three edges---in near FINE condition. John Hoyer Updike, who lived from 1932-2009, was an American novelist and short story writer. "Roger's Version" is about Roger Lambert, a theology professor in his fifties who believes he can prove that God exists with computer science. Roger is challenged by Dale, an evangelical graduate student who Roger is convinced is having sex with his wife, Esther. Hence, Roger becomes involved with his nineteen-year-old niece, Verna, but he becomes abusive to her one and half year old, mixed-race daughter, Paula. Roger begins to tutor Verna, but one evening he shoves Verna. Obviously, Updike is paralleling Nathaniel Hawthorne's "The Scarlet Letter" with similar characters to HESTER PRYNNE, ARTHUR DIMESDALE, LITTLE PEARL, and ROGER CHILLINGSWORTH. 329 pages.
