Description: This is a fantastic and rare textile applique from the enigmatic Chuquibamba culture. Dating from about 1000-1475 C.E., the Chuquibamba people were eventually incorporated into the Inca empire. Many Chuquibamba textiles incorporate images of this type of applique. But the actual appliques are very rare. I was lucky enough to score a few at auction and am releasing this one from my collection. These things are complex and fascinating. The design is an interlocking stepped geometric motif in forest green and dark olive. Separating the two identical geometric patterns is a double border in red. Within the two red lines of the double border is an extremely fine and remarkably white thread which wraps around the much thicker warp. I've included some close ups and shots of the reverse side of the applique to give an idea of the complexity of weaving techniques employed. This was no doubt a prestige textile with some deep symbolic meaning related to the Andean cosmovision. Really fascinating piece. Approximately 5" x 7"
