Description: Right after World War 2, the British decided to take captured German Grand Prix cars from the 1930's and do a detailed report / investigation into how these Mercedes and Auto-Union cars were built- hoping to find out their secrets- secrets that could be used in building a superior British entry into Grand Prix racing in the late 1940's. The drivers of these cars in the 1930's were true legends of motor sports- Manfred Von Brauchitsch, Rudi Caracciola, England's Dick Seaman, Herman Lang and Bernd Rosemeyer. This hardcover book was published in 1996 and it was originally printed in 1949- this edition is exactly like the original. The reproduced papers really look like someone was typing with an original typewriter from the late 1940's. It's full of black and white photos showing in detail the manufacturing secrets of these all-conquering German Grand Prix cars. What makes this book even nicer is I'm including with it a signed / autographed black and white photo from German Formula 1 and sports car driver Hans Herrmann's personal collection. Hans drove these pre-war Formula 1 cars for over 50 years in special events run by Mercedes, Audi and other organizations. He's one of the very few drivers to have ever sat behind the wheel of one of these famous cars. I've known Hans since the 1990's and this comes from his own library. Herrmann is particularly well known for winning the 1970 24 hours of LeMans sports car race for Porsche; in a Porsche 917- that company's VERY FIRST WIN at LeMans. Hans Herrmann, as a young and coming F-1 driver, was part of the Mercedes Grand Prix team that won the 1954 and 1955 Formula 1 championship with Stirling Moss, Herrmann, Juan Fangio and Karl Kling as their drivers. This photo signed by Hans is an original photo from the Mercedes factory; a period photograph and NOT a reproduction from nowadays. This book was printed in the UK decades ago and it was only done in a limited number; a very niche printing. It's available on Ebay but only from the UK and asking prices, with shipping included to the US, are well above $150. I'm asking $139 for it and that includes the signed Herrmann photo. Think it's a good deal for someone.
