Description: Robert Frost: The Trial By Existence [signed by Frost] Author: SERGEANT, Elizabeth Shepley [Robert Frost - subject] Title: Robert Frost: The Trial By Existence [signed by Frost] Publication: New York: Holt, Rinehart and Winston, 1960 Edition: Second printing Description: Second printing. Octavo, 451pp. A very good copy, with a few faint stains to boards, some foxing to the endpapers, in a good or better dust jacket, with general creasing, rubbing, and minor chips to extremities. A magnificent copy, SIGNED and lengthily INSCRIBED by the author on the front free endpaper to a close friend, and also SIGNED by Frost in his usual pen on the same page. The inscription reads: "For Helen B. Hart with good memories of my days with her in Ripton - all closely connected with this book. Affectionately, Elizabeth Shepley Sergeant. Sept 22, 1960. Piermont, New York." Frost has written, "and Robert Frost" just below Sergreant's name, and used his own pen. Accompanying the book is a group of four autograph letters from Sergeant to Hart, over the course of about two months, discussing the logistics of her going up to Ripton to participate in the Bread Loaf Writer's Conference and to stay with Hart. The aging Sergeant gives careful instructions on what foods she can and cannot eat, and the difficulties of finding a ride up there, given that she either does not have a car, or cannot drive, or both. She also discusses the matter of signing this book and when she will be able to give it to Hart. Sergeant was the sister of Katherine Sergeant White, the wife of E. B. White and mother of the late author Roger Angell. Sergeant was a journalist and nonfiction writer, who had early success at McClure's Magazine, under the editorship of Willa Cather, who became a lifelong friend. After her early muckraking days, she was a war correspondent for the New Republic in France during World War I (she was injured by a hand grenade), and moved on to write about varied subjects, including the Pueblo Indians, and profiles of numerous famous Americans.Later books by Frost and especially any later biographies or critical texts with him as subject are quite rare signed by the poet. He died less than two and a half years after the publication of this book, in January 1963. This is a signed copy with appealing provenance, at home in any significant Frost collection.
