Description: Eduard Caret (b. 1910, Pont Aven, France) was a precociously gifted child artist, who moved early in life to the Forest at Fontainbleau. This forest was close to the village of Barbizon, from which the great school of Barbizon painters (which included Jean-Baptiste Camille Corot, Theodore Rousseau, Jean-Francoise Millet, Charles-Francoise Daubigny, etc.) got its name. Gathering there between 1830 and 1860, these artists were the immediate precursors to the impressionists. Caret clearly follows on in the tradition of the Barbizon artists, using that same palette of dark browns and greens to depict intimate forest scenes. (Later in life Caret went on to study at Les Beaux Arts in Paris.) This little gem of a painting is an oil on board depicting the edge of a river, lined with thick, impenetrable trees. It was probably painted in the late 1930's somewhere in France and bears Caret's graceful, painted signature in the lower left hand corner. The painting itself is 8" x 10". Framed in a lovely gold and velvet frame, it is 12 5/8 " x 14 5/8".
