Balfour, 1783 Edition: Fourth Description: This treatise, "Principal of the University of Edinburgh, Historiographer to his Majesty for Scotland, and member of the Royal Academy of History at Madrid" was written in three volumes The first looks at the history of navigation and exploration up through and including the voyages of Christopher Columbus The second volume covers the extent and grandeur of America as well as the conquest of "New Spain" by Cortes Volume III covers further conquest of Central and South AmericaThe set is illustrated with four folding maps of Mexico or "New Spain" (including California); the Gulf of Mexico, the islands and countries adjacent; South America; the countries on the South Sea, from Panama to Guayquil; and one folding plate, a chart of Aztec symbols This stated fourth edition was bound in the 19th century in three-quarter leather with bright gilt lettering and tooling and raised bands on the spines It is noted that the Preface pages in were rebound out of order The books show some age/wear externally, with moderate scuffing and wear, primarily at the edges and corners The front hinges on all volumes are cracked and somewhat loose but are still holding The text on the centuries old pages is mostly clear but occasionally faded The pages exhibit significant age toning, foxing and some water staining in vol 3William Robertson, DD FRSE FSA was a Scottish historian, minister of religion, and Principal of the University of Edinburgh He was born at the Manse of Borthwick, Midlothian, and educated at Borthwick Parish School, Dalkeith Grammar School, and at the University of Edinburgh (1733â€"41), where he studied divinity (DD 1759) He became minister at Gladsmuir (East Lothian) in 1743 and later at Lady Yester's Kirk and Greyfriars Kirk in Edinburgh A staunch Presbyterian and Whig, he volunteered to defend the city against the Jacobites led by Prince Charles Edward Stuart in 1745Robertson became Royal Chaplain to George III (1761), Principal of the University of Edinburgh (1762), Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland in 1763, and Historiographer Royal in 1764, reviving a role within the Royal household in Scotland that had been in abeyance from 1709 until 1763 He was also a member of The Poker Club His most notable work was perhaps his History of Scotland 1542 - 1603, begun in 1753 and first published in 1759 He was a significant figure in the Scottish Enlightenment and also of the moderates in the Church of Scotland.
