Description: Come In and Other Poems By Robert Frost Selection, biological Introduction & Commentary By Louis Untermeyer Illustrated by John O'Hara Cosgrave II This is a hard cover with pristine facsimile dust jacket and full color illustrated end papers, black and white illustrations published by Henry, Holt and Company, Inc; copyright 1943; the stated First Printing. Under the full color frontis illustration Robert Frost has written a simple, extraordinary, and lovely inscription that is really a poem. "To Syddie- because I know you like poetry, Frost and New England, because you are graduating with honors because I love you-" He signs his name with a diminutive, and it is dated 1943. Note the play on “Frost” made obvious by the capitalization of the word. A lovely collection of poems, including Birches, The Road Not Taken, Mending Wall, three of his most celebrated poems, and Stopping By Woods on a Snowy Evening, that contains the amazing lines: "The woods are lovely dark and deep. But I have promises to keep, And miles to go before I sleep, And miles to go before I sleep." These lines have been interpreted in so many ways, from an exploration of fundamental questions of existence, depicting with chilling starkness the loneliness of the individual in an indifferent universe, to an incredibly uplifting view of New England pluck and fortitude. Condition: Book itself is in good condition with discoloration to covers, but corner tips are square. Up to page 21, there is occasional ink underlining. Slight darkening on one table of contents page. NO tears. The dust jacket is a facsimile and is in pristine condition with an archival, removable, sanitary cover for years of safe keeping. Robert Frost was one of the greatest American poets, and the only poet in history to win four (4) Pulitzer Prizes for Poetry. He was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal in 1960 for his poetic works, and although he never graduated from college, Frost received over 40 honorary degrees, including ones from Princeton, Oxford and Cambridge universities, and was the only person to receive two honorary degrees from Dartmouth College. The poet/critic Randall Jarrell wrote "Robert Frost, along with Stevens and Eliot, seems to me the greatest of the American poets of this century. Frost's virtues are extraordinary. No other living poet has written so well about the actions of ordinary men; his wonderful dramatic monologues or dramatic scenes come out of a knowledge of people that few poets have had, and they are written in a verse that uses, sometimes with absolute mastery, the rhythms of actual speech".
